Cyprus, the “island of love” or Aphrodite’s Island, is one of the best places to go this summer. Whether you have seven or twenty days to spend in Cyprus, make sure you rent a car. As there is no regular and effective public transport system in Cyprus, getting a rental car will be a wise choice.

1.      UK similarities

Driving in Cyprus is pretty much the same as driving in the UK, excluding the traffic jams. There are only four European countries – Malta, UK, Ireland and Cyprus, in which cars are driven on the left hand side of the road. This is a legacy of the British colonisation.

2.      Roads

Cyprus has several modern motorways which are always being improved.  Its motorway network links all the main coastal resorts and key towns, like the capital – Nicosia, which, incidentally is the last divided city in the world. All the main highways are dual carriageways and well maintained so a drive through Cyprus should be pretty straight-forward. All considered, the roads are as good as or maybe even better than most in the UK.

The motorways:

A1 – Nicosia to Limassol

A2 – connects A1 near Pera Chorio with A3 by Larnaca

A3 – Larnaca to Agia Napa

A5 – connects A1 near Kofinou with A3 by Larnaca

A6 – Pafos to Limassol

A9 – Nicosia to Astromeritis

3.      Cheap fuel

Fuel in Cyprus is generally considerably cheaper than in the UK. A drive from Larnaca to Paphos, along the coastline, an hour and a half drive, will cost around €16 (2012).

4.      Weather

It is worth remembering how hot it can get in Cyprus when you’re searching for a car hire offer. Be sure to select a car with air conditioning, so you stay cool as you drive across the island.  Once you hit the coast, you can always take the windows down and let that fresh Mediterranean air breeze over your shoulders and throughout the car.

5.      Enjoy Cyprus

In a seven day holiday you can relax at a nice resort, enjoy the exotic beaches and the local food.  Still, you have to visit a few of the inland cities and explore the cultural historic centres.

For a seven day trip to Cyprus, renting a car is definitely worth it, especially when it makes it so easy to get around the island. Take advantage of this summer’s offer and book your cheap car hire to enjoy the island of love in style.
