The UK has so many great locations squeezed into such a small space, it can be hard to decide where to visit. Whether you’re taking a fortnight away, backpacking through the country or just fancying a weekend away, the choice can be difficult. Narrowing it down to just five places wasn’t easy, but here are five cities to visit in the UK that we think are well worth your time.

Table of Contents

London

Of course, the most popular place to visit in the UK is capital city, London. Among the towering skyscrapers and busy streets, you can take in the sites, spend perhaps a bit too much shopping and learn about the rich history of the city and the UK as whole. All National Museums are free entry meaning you can take your pick of the British Museum, the National Gallery, the National History Museum and much more.

Cardiff

Cardiff is one of the must-see cities to visit in the UK if you’re a science fiction fan. Home of the Doctor Who Experience, fans can see props, costumes and replica sets from the show’s history from the 1960s right up to the modern series based in the city itself. Other highlights include grabbing something to eat at the beautiful Cardiff Bay. Be sure to check if there are any special events when planning your trip, as the bay hosts a range of events all year round!

Cambridge

One of the education capitols of the UK, Cambridge offers visitors a quintessentially British experience with great scenery as well as local and national history. You can even take a look round Trinity College to get a first-hand look at the university whose alumni include Isaac Newton, Francis Bacon and Prince Charles! Perhaps the best way to see the city is to take one of their punting tours as their boats take you through the College Backs in just forty-five minutes. Tours run every day and can be either booked in advance or bought on the day if you’re feeling spontaneous.

Manchester

The Smiths, Buzzcocks and Oasis are just some of the bands to originate from Manchester, one of the biggest and most popular cities to visit in the UK. Rife with music venues, we recommend Deaf Institute and Sankeys as the best places to catch a gig or guest DJ in the city. Then there’s perhaps the city’s biggest draw, its football teams. Home to current Premier League champions, Manchester City, as well as the most successful English football team in the sport’s history, Manchester United, there really is no better place to catch the beautiful game.

Edinburgh

With a host of festivals throughout the year, Edinburgh is one of the best cities to visit in the UK when looking to experience the arts. Celebrating the likes of jazz and blues, the written word, filmmaking and contemporary art, the city springs to life in the summer. This is topped off with the notorious Fringe Festival where more than twenty thousand artists take the opportunity, no matter how large or small, to perform to the public. Squeeze in a stop at The Baked Potato Shop and some drinks at The Hive and you’ll be living the UK student lifestyle in no time!
