The tiny group of Malta islands lie in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Just below Italy’s island of Sicily, Malta enjoys a year-round warm climate as well as a beautifully diverse landscape; from exotic sandy beaches and dramatic rocky coastlines, to cosmopolitan resorts and ancient cities.

Relaxing in Sliema

The most popular resort for newlyweds is the resort of Sliema, on the central east coast. Famous for its five-star spa centres, Sliema is the perfect place for couples looking to indulge and unwind on their honeymoon. The spa complexes in Sliema take advantage of the island’s resources, specialising in Thalassotherapy (salt water) hydro-massages, seaweed wraps and Mediterranean mud scrubs.

The most popular spas in Sliema are at the Hotel Fortina Resort and The Palace, both 5* hotels that offer incredible honeymoon suites. The spas overlook the gorgeous, azure ocean, as well as boasting views of the Malta’s historic capital city of Valletta.

Sliema doesn’t have a sandy beach but if you can tear yourself away from massages and poolside cocktail bars, it’s possible to sunbathe on the flat rocks and enter the sea via ladders.

The rocky coast is perfect for snorkelling together. Sliema has a long boulevard lined with elegant restaurants where you can enjoy fresh traditional foods whilst watching the sun set. There’s also a vibrant nightlife to explore.

Sliema has a luxury shopping area of boutiques and designer shops – perfect if you’re in the mood to treat yourselves.

Valletta

On honeymoons to Malta, couples can explore the stunning city of Valletta. The capital city of Malta, Valletta is a protected UNESCO site due to its huge amount of churches, monuments and important sites. Valletta is tiny, just 600m x 1000m, making it one of the world’s most historically dense cities.

Couples won’t want to miss out on the impressive fortified harbours, with cruise ships and traditional fishing boats. There are also historical forts on the harbour that give full costume re-enactments, complete with real cannon fire!

The city’s gardens are high up and give excellent views of the area. In the balmy evenings enjoy a meal in the charming courtyard restaurants or relax together over a glass of local wine in the intimate cellar bars.

St Julian’s

For a chic night out together, try St Julian’s resort next to Sliema. Spinola Bay in St Julian’s is renowned for having the best restaurants in Malta, as well as breath-taking views of the bay and the sea.

Malta Adventure

Malta is home to some of Europe’s most spectacular beaches. Although much of Malta’s coastline is rocky, couples who want to feel the sand between their toes have a number of choices.

On the west coast is Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, a Blue Flag beach that has red-gold sands, bright blue waters and is backed by lush vegetation and cliffs. It is fairly remote compared to Malta’s buy sandy beach in Mellieha Bay, but Ghajn Tuffieha has all the facilities you need at the next door beach at Golden Bay.

There are beautiful beaches on the smaller islands of Malta; discover Ramla Bay in Gozo or the jaw-dropping Blue Lagoon on Comino. Blue Lagoon’s turquoise waters and white shore makes for one of the most romantic scenes in Malta. You can reach Gozo and Comino from ferries at either, Valletta, Sliema or Cirkewwa Harbour in the north.

Best time to Visit

Malta enjoys year around sunshine. In the peak summer months, temperatures reach the 30s. If you want something a bit more temperate, visit the island in the spring months. This is when all the flowers and local plants are in full bloom and looking their best.

Location

Malta is a small archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Italy. It receives daily flights to its international airport Luga (or Luqa). Malta is also a common day trip for European cruise ships.
