Northern Islands of Croatia

The islands stretch from north to south, starting with the famous Brijuni archipelago, which are a national park, followed by Croatia’s largest and second largest island – Krk and Cres. The northern islands offer a unique combination of preserved nature and the traditional Dalmatian way of life. If you want to explore, or just lay back and relax on the beach or in one of the numerous cafés this is the perfect place for you. Cheap accommodation is easy to find in the various hotels or even in the houses of local residents.

Going a bit south we find ourselves near the ancient town of Zadar and, of course the Zadar archipelago. The archipelago consists of hundreds of small islands and islets, most notably the Kornati Islands, and offers the perfect opportunity for adventurers to charter a boat and explore the islands by themselves. So get in your boat and set sail for one of the 130 Kornati Islands, or the famous romantic, heart shaped Island of Galesnjak while you’re there. It comes as no surprise Croatia is one of the most popular sailing destinations in the world, the possibilities are endless.

Southern Islands of Croatia

In the southern part of the country, near the towns of Split and Dubrovnik, which are fantastic tourist destination themselves as well, we find even more little slices of paradise. Located here are some of Croatia’s most significant, most beautiful islands. They include the Island of Korcula, birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo, Europe’s sunniest Island – Hvar, Mljet, which is a national park, and the dazzling Lastovo Island. If your accommodation is in one of the nearby towns simply hop on a ferry and after a short trip you’ll be mingling with the friendly locals on one of the islands. Your biggest problem will be deciding whether to visit the historically rich cities first, or to take a break from the buzz of town and explore the untouched nature of the islands and enjoy a more laid-back experience.
