Security may not be the most glamorous aspect of world travel, but it sparkles with new intrigue as soon as diamonds are involved.

In light of the recent Cannes diamond theft , world travelers may be left feeling like Pink Panthers and modern-day Robin Hoods are lurking around every corner. And while you aren’t likely to become a target of the infamous Pink Panther jewel thieves (unless you are toting around a briefcase stuffed with rare diamonds), you may still want to consider a few key security precautions that can help you protect the valuables you do have.

Keep valuables safe while traveling

Here are some things to watch out for when traveling with valuables.

Watch what you take

The first step toward keeping your belongings safe on any trip is to think carefully about what you pack. While you may envision a scenario where you need to wear you great-grandmother’s diamond ring to an impromptu dinner with Britain’s prime minister, this scenario may not pan out. It is more likely that you will be stuck worrying about the ring for the entire trip. Always consider leaving your most beloved and valuable belongings at home, and ask yourself the question, “Do I really need to bring this?”

Watch what you leave

Be careful about where you leave your things. Don’t store valuable items with other luggage and be careful about handing off your bags to anyone, including a van or taxi driver who is offering to store them in the trunk. You should also never leave valuable items in plain sight in your rental car, no matter how safe the surrounding area may seem. Criminals watch carefully for people who aren’t watching their things, so make sure you always keep your valuable items with you.

Watch your purse

Or better yet, don’t even carry a purse. Professional thieves in large cities specialize in stealing purses; some pickpockets can cut out the bottom of your purse and catch everything that falls out before you even notice. If you are doing extensive international travel, consider purchasing a money-belt instead, where you can store your money and passport. It is a lot easier for someone to snatch your purse than to access your money belt, especially if you wear it under your clothing. If you opt to carry around a wallet instead, make sure you keep it in your front pocket. It is much easier for pickpockets to take your wallet from your back pocket without you noticing.

Watch where you sleep

If you are planning to stay in a hostel, make sure you research the security rating before you get there. Many hostels feature shared rooms, which often have eight to twelve guests sleeping in the same space. This can be a perfectly safe option, but you will definitely want to make sure you lock up your belongings before falling asleep. Some hostels have lockers in the room that you can use, and many hotels have safes. Otherwise, consider investing in a small lock that can secure your purse or bag while you sleep.

Just watch out

The best way you can protect your belongings is to simply stay alert and watch out for anything that seems suspicious. If you are planning to travel abroad for the first time, you may want to research personal security tips before your trip so that you will be better prepared. You international journey will be much more enjoyable if you follow a few simple tips to help keep your belongings (and your briefcase of diamonds) as secure as possible.
